I write free software to help conserve energy. I try to write programs
that get things done in the minimum number of machine steps. I also try
to minimize memory usage.

I do not enjoy hearing the news of the disaster at the nuclear power
plant in Fukushima. 福岛原子力发电站

Most of the political leaders of Japan say that nuclear energy is
necessary, for the economy requires energy and Japan does not have
fossil fuel resources. Even after this terrible accident they have
not changed their stance.

I am sure much energy can be saved by improving computer hardware and
software and telling people not to use inefficient products.

In Japan electric power is produced by private companies. They want
to maximize profit. A common method of profit enhancement is by
capturing scale merit with larger nuclear reactors. The profits
are steady while things are normal. But when an accident happens,
the damage is severe.

The greater the concentration of energy, the greater the destructive force.

Note that this applies also to batteries of laptop computers, mobile
phones and hand-held devices. Companies want to make their products
attractive and load them with fancy functions, which generally consume
energy. Batteries become more powerful to provide this energy. Because
consumers do not want larger or heavier gadgets, batteries are made
smaller and lighter. As a consequence, the batteries condense large
amounts of energy into a small area, in a case with thin walls.

Efficient software means fewer dangerous power plants. It also means
safer appliances for the consumer.

I think it is also possible for us to save energy by using simple
software when possible. We can turn X off and use text consoles when
writing and testing programs.

But how do you do this?

And how about Tokyo now? One of my friend in Tokyo told me there are
many aftershocks still. Best wishes for you and your family, my friend.
