I now have to setup collaborative work sites for my company needs and, given our experience with Zope, Plone seems like a good candidate, requiring minor customization. Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server (SPS) and Windows Sharepoint Services (WSS) have been suggested as alternatives, providing better MS Office integration at the expense of vendor lock-in / closed source solution / Windows only. I now need to confirm that using Plone on a large scale is the way to go instead of the Microsoft solution. I have noticed the following main differences : Plone pros / SPS&WSS; cons : 1 - SPS has an expensive per-server and per-user licencing scheme (http://www.microsoft.com/office/sharepoint/howtobuy/default.mspx). 2 - WSS is less expensive the SPS but has some limitations : 100 simultaneous users . 1 transaction/second. WMSDE does not support full-text search. You cannot deploy WMSDE in web farm/clustered configurations. 3 - SPS / WSS creates and uses local NTFS permissions, so migrating data between systems seems to be difficult. 4 - SPS / WSS is closed source and proprietary. 5 - SPS / WSS seems to have limited support for non-Windows clients, except perhaps Macs (any experience). 6 - Plone has an active community and a wide variety of free/open source products. 7 - Plone can run on different server OSes / architectures (Solaris, Linux, Windows / Intel, Sparc) 8 - Plone integrates great with our LDAP directory 9 - Plone is easier to install and deploy SPS&WSS; pros / Plone cons : 1 - SPS/WSS has a better integration with MS Office. 2 - Management feels it is harder to find people with Zope/Plone/Python experience than with SPS/ASP experience 3 - SPS provides a stable versioning functionality out of the box Has anyone experience with SPS or WSS with regard to : 1 - Does LDAP integration work ? 2 - Does SPS / WSS work fine on Mac clients ? 3 - Migrating data from one server to another ? Any help, comments, off-list emails are welcome? Thanks in advance PS: other alternatives ? -- # Time is unimportant, only life important! ## 面朝开源,我心自由!
